Living Through Turbulent Times

It is hard to imagine yourself back in the 1960’s-70’s, “Civil Rights Movement,” reading your local paper, and watching network news. This weekend I observed the *24* Hour News cycle, showing the same events running repeatedly on every news report. I felt transported back fifty years ago 1968-69. The answers and solutions have been enumerated during this half century by historians and sociologists.

Unfortunately, the solutions have not been put into effect. I am someone who is a proponent of social equality and justice. We can debate what needs to be done.  However, this debate is not the intended purpose of this post.  I believe promoting self-care, and a sense of inner strength is essential. Remaining present and checking in with oneself helps to deter the sense of being overwhelmed.

Taking one moment at a time, one step at time, I suggest that we stop, and pay attention to the present moment. Walk away from the news and the television. Sit down and take one deep breath! Slowly releasing it and allowing a sense of calm to sweep all over your body. Through our breath we can take ourselves inside to a sense of peace and calm.  We do this “breath by breath”, and with each moment, we stop to take time for ourselves. We allow ourselves to feel to a sense of safety and wellbeing.  This does not take away what is happening in our world, it gives us a chance to re-group and collect ourselves. Self-care and self-love, helps to build our inner resources. Only then can we spread love and acceptance outwardly to the world.
